Luís Mendonça

Luís Mendonça, better known by his pseudonym Gémeo Luís, is a designer, illustrator, and researcher born in Maputo in 1965.[1] He holds a PhD in Illustration and teaches and researches at FBAUP (Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto), working across communication design, product design, social design, entrepreneurship, illustration, set design, architecture, museography, and sculpture.[2]

Illustration & awards

Exhibiting painting, drawing, and illustration since 1986,[5] Mendonça has illustrated for the national and international press, books, record covers, and film posters, working with established and emerging authors.[5] He won the Prémio Nacional de Ilustração from Portugal's Direção-Geral do Livro e das Bibliotecas in 2005 for his illustrations of Eugénio Roda's O quê, que, quem, and again in 2015 for Dança; he has also received a World Illustration Award and the Prémio Nacional BIG (2017).[5] He has also produced the graphic treatment for an exhibition on the Prémio Camões, Portugal's top literary award.[5]

José Gourmet

Mendonça is art director of José Gourmet, the Portuguese gourmet-foods brand, "responsible from scratch for all the company's design and art direction."[3][4] His illustration work also appears directly on the brand's product packaging.[1]

Eterogémeas

He runs Eterogémeas, an independent Portuguese publisher of illustrated children's books, poetry, creative journals, and annual illustrated agenda-calendars, drawing on contributions from illustrators and authors across multiple countries.[6] At ESAD (Escola Superior de Artes e Design), Mendonça taught André Correia, and — impressed by the quality of his work — the two collaborated on Álvaro Cunhal — Ao Canto do Espelho (2006), for which André photographed the featured objects in black and white and handled the page layout. Mendonça later hired André at Eterogémeas (2008–2009) — André's first job — where he extensively collaborated with him alongside Vítor Carneiro, designing the first versions of the gemeoluis.com, Eterogémeas, and José Gourmet websites.
