Edições Eterogémeas
Independent publisher, Porto
Edições Eterogémeas is an independent Portuguese publisher run by Luís Mendonça (Gémeo Luís), producing illustrated children's and young-adult books, poetry, philosophical and creative-writing collections, and bilingual publications that treat illustration as central to the work rather than decoration.[1]
Since 2008, the publisher has produced an annual illustrated agenda-calendar — a functional object turned into an artistic one — drawing on contributions from dozens of illustrators from different countries each year; recent editions include 2026 Braços Abertos and 2025 Pequenos Grandes Gestos.[1] Its catalogue, dating back to at least 1997,[2] includes titles addressing biodiversity and environmental themes (Animalia, Azul), family dynamics (Minhamãe, Lobo Bullying), and language (Tombo, Das Palavras).[1]
André Correia
André Correia worked at Eterogémeas as Web and Graphic Designer from January 2008 to June 2009 — his first job — working alongside Vítor Carneiro.[3] This was also the period — 2008, the year the publisher's annual agenda-calendar series began[1] — in which André, a student of Mendonça's at ESAD, was invited to work at his studio after Mendonça was impressed by the quality of André's work.
During this time André designed and developed a presentation website for the architecture practice Nuno Valentim Architects, a portfolio website for Eterogémeas itself with cross-linked entries for publications, writers, and illustrators, and the first version of the Gémeo Luís portfolio website, built in Flash, ActionScript 2.0, and XML. He also handled web mastering, deployment, and database management for these sites.[3] The Eterogémeas website he built has its own page here.
Books
Beyond web design, André has said he collaborated on numerous Eterogémeas books during this period, handling design, typesetting, pagination, and preparing final copies for print — most illustrated by Gémeo Luís. Titles include:
- SSSCHLEP — Gémeo Luís & Eugénio Roda
- ABeCé de las historias — Gémeo Luís & Eugénio Roda
- A Boneca Palmira — Matilde Rosa Araújo & Gémeo Luís
- Meia Bola — Manuela Barros Ferreira & André Carvalho
- 2008 Voltas no Carrossel — the publisher's 2008 annual agenda-book, with text by Eugénio Roda
- 2009 Mundos a Céu Aberto — the publisher's 2009 annual agenda-book, marking the International Year of Astronomy
Eterogémeas's catalogue runs to more than 60 titles without publication dates listed on the site, so further 2008–2009 titles may exist beyond these confirmed matches.
