José Saraiva

Illustrator, graphic designer & educator

José Manuel Saraiva (born 1974, Porto) is an illustrator, graphic designer, educator, researcher, curator, and author of children's literature texts.[1] He graduated in Communication Design from FBAUP (Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto), receiving the Eng.º António de Almeida Prize for the highest course average of the 1997/98 academic year, and later completed a PhD in Arts and Communication at the same faculty.[1]

Teaching

At ESAD (Escola Superior de Artes e Design), Saraiva has taught since the 1998/1999 academic year, covering Introduction to Illustration and Drawing in the Multimedia programme and Illustration in the Communication Design degree — where his students have included André Correia — and coordinates the school's Postgraduate Programme in Illustration and Digital Animation.[1]

Books & recognition

Saraiva has written more than 20 books, many selected for Portugal's National Reading Plan (PNL); his book Nesta História eu não entro! was named one of "100 books for the future" by the Direção-Geral do Livro e das Bibliotecas (DGLB). His books have been published in Portugal, Belgium, China, France, and Brazil.[1] His illustration work has been selected for the Bologna Children's Book Fair Illustration Exhibition and published in Communication Arts and 3x3 magazines. He received a special mention at the 16th National Illustration Award (2012) and "Best of the Best" at the Hiii Illustration International Competition in 2014, 2018, and 2021.[2]
