João Martino
Communication designer & educator
João Martino (born 1972, Porto) is a communication designer, researcher, and educator, with a degree and specialization in Communication Design from ESAD (Escola Superior de Artes e Design), completed in 1996 and 2016.[1]
Teaching
Martino teaches the Project curricular unit at ESAD, where he taught André Correia graphic design with a focus on typography, and has held various coordination roles, including coordinator of its Postgraduate in Information-Oriented Design (since 2020). Between 2008 and 2016 he taught Advanced Studies in Editorial Design and Typography on the Master's in Graphic Design and Editorial Projects at FBAUP (Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto).[1]
Practice
He co-founded Atelier Martino&Jaña (1999–2014) and is a co-founder, alongside Joana Sobral, Susana Almeida, and Miguel Almeida, of Non-verbal Club (2014–present), a Porto design studio focused on custom design solutions and communication consultancy built on careful, informed use of typography, working on editorial projects, identity, visual systems, and digital communication with particular emphasis on culture and architecture.[1][2] Notable projects include the identity for Lisbon's Teatro Nacional de São Carlos opera house.[2]
