Joana Rêgo
Painter & professor of Drawing
Joana Rêgo (born 15 November 1970, Porto) is a Portuguese plastic artist and painter.[1] She graduated in Painting from FBAUP (Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto) in 1995, completed a Master's in Painting at the San Francisco Art Institute, and holds a PhD in Art and Design from FBAUP (2017).[1] Between 1998 and 1999 she held grants from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Luso-American Development Foundation.[1]
Practice
Rêgo's work relates image and word in complex ways, using botanical elements to explore nature as a territory of sensibility and memory, giving flowers and plants a metaphorical dimension.[1] She has held around 35 solo exhibitions in Portugal and abroad — including a 2001 show in Rotterdam under the Porto–Rotterdam European Capitals of Culture programme, funded by a joint grant from the IAC, Gulbenkian, and FLAD — alongside numerous collective exhibitions and projects.[1] Her work is held in collections including Caixa Geral de Depósitos, the PLMJ Foundation, the European Parliament in Brussels, and the Portuguese State Contemporary Art Collection.[1] She has won first prizes at the Erotic Art competition ARGO (2003), the 9th Bienal de Cerveira for painting (1997), and BCM 95 (1995).[1]
Teaching
Rêgo has been an auxiliary professor at FBAUP's Department of Plastic Arts since 1999, and is also a professor of Desenho (Drawing) at ESAD (Escola Superior de Artes e Design), where she has coordinated the school's second-year Drawing curriculum and taught André Correia, who has credited her as an early influence on his work.[2]
