Heitor Alvelos
Full Professor of Design, University of Porto
Heitor Alvelos holds a PhD from the Department of Design of the Royal College of Art (2003) and a Master's in Visual Communication from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1992).[1]
Academic career
Alvelos has been a Full Professor of Design at the University of Porto since 2023, and is director of ID+, the Institute for Research in Design, Media and Culture, shared between the University of Porto and the University of Aveiro, since 2007. He has been a Professor of New Media at the University of Porto since 2006 and is course director of its PhD in Design programme.[1] Among the students whose theses he has supervised is André Correia, guiding his master's research.
Recognition
He chairs the Scientific Board (HSS) at Portugal's Foundation for Science and Technology, has been a member of Academia Europaea since 2015, and became Vice-President of the European Academy of Design in 2023.[1] His research interests include participatory media, creative citizenship action, and cultural criminology.[1]
Other activities
Alvelos is also art director for the editorial output of Manobras no Porto, a singer with the group Stopestra, and co-runs the music label 333.[1]
